The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer

3.0

3.5 A very short book with some lovely illustrations about gift economies, what they are, what the can look like, and how we can strive for them in our hyper capitalist world. The author mentions that this was originally an essay that she then expanded on and I’m sorry to say that it sometimes feels like it. Even though this is short, it at times feels repetitive. Also, though no fault of the book/author, I think that I am slightly too cynical for parts of this book, which honestly made me sad (the being cynical part). It still had some interesting ideas and a sense of hope that was engaging. It’s an imperfect little book I wouldn’t mind owning (I borrowed it from the library) and perhaps coming back to when the cynicism becomes too great and it seems we’ve lost all sense of community.
