Attack of the Mutant by R.L. Stine
3.5
Attack of the Mutant is another Goosebumps book that I very distinctly remember reading as a kid, primarily because it's so unlike most other Goosebumps books. The concept was fascinating to me. I didn't have much access to comic books, thanks to where I grew up in the UK, and so reading a story about a kid who collected comics and had a local comic book shop just sounded amazing. Essentially, this story is about a kid discovering that a comic book he collects is actually real, which he finds out when he stumbles across the supervillain's lair.
I vaguely recalled that the book seemed to mostly comprise of the main character, Skipper, exploring this lair - which is bright pink tower with a green dome. I wasn't sure if my memory was accurate there, but actually there is quite a lot of this book dedicated to Skipper wandering around hallways and getting into lifts. Which admittedly doesn't sound very exciting, but honestly I still had such a blast with this book. The humour in it just works so well - the running joke about Skipper's friend Wilson being obsessed with collecting rubber stamps and Skipper having zero time for such a hobby was a constant source of amusement. I also found myself smiling at Skipper's self-deprecating depictions of himself.
Admittedly the story goes a bit silly at the end, although this is a Goosebumps book so that is almost to be expected. Still, it's not a particularly spooky Goosebumps book as R.L. Stine leans more into the zany adventures of a comic book story. All things considered, I genuinely had a great time revisiting this book. It's bonkers but enjoyable.
