The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson
5.0
I devoured that novel.
I haven't read that many books about transgender people (although I do have a few on my "to read" list), but I don't need to have read the entire bibliography to know this is an AMAZING novel for teenagers who are struggling with their gender identity. It tackles gender and sexual (on the side) identity in such a way that, even confronted with the harsh reality of trans teenagers lives, one can feel hopeful about the outcome of transitioning. Yes, David/Kate and Leo are being mocked at times, but they get through it.
What I especially liked about this book is that Lisa Williamson depicts today's reality. Yes some teenagers mock and insult transgender people, but they are not the majority. She includes awareness from the adults around school and at home.
Bottom line is, this is a beautiful novel for someone who might be scared to go through the transition process because of how their loved ones, friends and classmates might react.
