Sasaki and Miyano, Vol. 1 by Shou Harusono

4.0

Like a sweet piece of candy, this series is going to give me a toothache and I seriously don't mind. I love how hard this series leans into the YA fluff!

Although the BL elements can be really thrown in there, it is very sweet how the writing shows the characters bonding over books. As someone who watches a lot of BL, the terminology wasn't new to me, nor the fandom experience, but I can see how that may be off-putting to those who are unfamiliar with the ins and outs. I recommend you keep reading as it becomes better integrated in volume 2. There is still some cringe factor, but for me, that mostly comes from the deep dark part of my fangirl soul that still finds it hard to see fandom in the light of day.

The thing I love most about this series is that I really enjoy seeing how creators are starting to illustrate the experience of finding a safe space in media and the ways many queer teens use it as a way to explore what romance can look like, even before they come to terms with their own sexuality.

Having already seen the anime, I am still really enjoying reading the series and I think this is a good way to re-experience the narrative.

If you enjoyed series like Kimi ni Todoke, you will enjoy this series.
