The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
3.0
Divarauni makes a compelling story of the alienation in American society. I read this as a fable but saw in a review it is described as Magic Realism. It is a fun read and I really have no criticism of the story or the writing. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Indian food or cooking. I was attracted to it for the love of spice. Written from the perspective of an Indian grocer - or spice shop owner who is really a sorceress assigned to aid in the Indian diaspora of Oakland California, it makes for a fun collection of stories. Each chapter focusing on the spice that will alleviate the pain of dislocation, misplaced love, anger, family dysfunction. Take your pick, some spice will redirect your path. A lovely collection of love stories with a dose of pantheism that makes you feel good.
