Unicorn: The Memoir of a Muslim Drag Queen by Amrou Al-Kadhi

5.0

The title pretty much sums this one up: Unicorn is Amrou Al-Kadhi’s memoir of being raised in a Muslim family, between the Middle East and the UK, and finding a path to their true queer selves. I have nothing but admiration for how honestly Al-Kadhi looks back on their life and expresses how they’ve struggled with difficult relationships to family members, institutions, religion and most importantly, themselves. The writing is insightful and I was particularly delighted with the eloquent descriptions of aquatic organisms - I’ve never considered how the ‘oceanic queer universe’ full of species with fluid concepts of sex might be of comfort to people who don’t feel comfortable with the strict boundaries of gender in our society. And listening to the audiobook narrated by the author themselves is just a cherry on top!
