The Ribbon Skirt by Cameron Mukwa [Scholastic Canada #gifted]
The Ribbon Skirt is a graphic novel about Anang who wants to make and wear a ribbon skirt to the upcoming powwow. Anang is two-spirit and nonbinary; an identity that they have only started to explore and accept. They're worried about what would happen if they do wear a ribbon skirt, a piece of clothing that is typically worn by girls. When Anang's friend stays with their grandparents and them, Anang is reminded of the school year that just finished - and the comments that were made about Anang's identity. Anang looks to their family and the spirits around them to look for guidance, inspiration, and courage to be able to follow their dreams and desires.
This is a beautiful story about identity. It is a coming-of-age story of a young two-spirit youth who wants to be accepted and finds joy and courage as they find confidence to stay true to themself.
