Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight
3.0
Kimberly McCreight has written a suspenseful story that I didn't want to put down though eventually had to as it was time for dinner. I had many ideas for suspects and every one of my ideas was wrong. I'd write more about that but then would have to mark this review as a spoiler.
This has been described as an exploration of motherhood and a look at the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. While this is accurate, it is not the lens through which I viewed the story. Rather I looked at it through the eyes of Cleo, Katrina's daughter. Katrina, while definitely focused on her daughter, was also focused on her job, clients and husband.
McCreight has crafted a mystery shared in short chapters, each chapter through either Cleo's or Katrina's perspective over the course of several days plus a few flashbacks by each of them related to their childhoods. I began to suspect everyone from friends to workmates to relatives. Suffice it to say that by story's end Cleo has a stronger appreciation of her Mom and a better understanding of her Mom's past. And I will stop here because, you know, otherwise there will be spoilers.
