Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman
5.0
This is the first fantasy book I've ever read that actually talked about gender and language in a seamless way that didn't feel insensitive or ill-informed. I loved that there was a trans character, but the story didn't revolve around the fact that she was trans. I also loved how it challenged the main character's assumptions about other people based on what they look like how they identify. Both of these books did a wonderful job criticizing religion and bigotry and how the two tend to go hand in hand. Also, bravo for the quig revolution!
I was also pretty excited near the end when we learn that Glisselda is also in love with Seraphina! (happy queers dancing in the distance) I wish there had been more about that through the books, but I did like that it ended with a polyamourous relationship between the three of them (I want more on that!)
I just wish there were more books set in this world. I'd love to know about the half dragons and saints, as well as learn more about the different cultures in this world.
