A charming, delightful, and gentle classic romance read, gorgeously written and full of lovable characters. Shirley Hollister is a strong, sweet, and brilliant female protagonist whom I loved, and loved seeing especially in an early 20th century romance.

Hill’s writing style is beautiful, the plot is lovely and interesting, and the romance and climaxes took my breath away. There were several times while reading when I found myself smiling, on the edge of my seat, or on the verge of happy tears, and it made the romantic in me very, very happy. The romance develops slowly throughout the text, but I honestly think the gradual buildup lends itself to the beauty of the novel overall. For me, the classic language sometimes took a minute to decipher, but I love classic novels, so I didn’t mind at all. The book also has Christian themes and ideals woven throughout the text, which again I didn't mind, but wanted to mention. It is by no means excessive, but it is definitely a strong, pleasant presence in the book.

Overall, I adored this book! I look forward to reading more of Grace Livingston Hill’s stories in the future.

Would recommend highly for a patient reader and a lover of romantic classics.
