Change of Heart by Kate Canterbary
medium-paced
5.0
"There's no such thing as too much. Just people who don't have the strength to embrace all of you."
I love Kate Canterbary's books because she writes about characters being seen, valued, and loved for exactly who they are with all of their flaws and imperfections. Whitney and Henry's story is yet another amazing example.
Everything about how Whitney and Henry meet and reconnect is messy from the wedding crashing to the surprise that Whitney is Henry's new boss. But none of that matters to Henry. And actually Whitney too but it takes her a lot longer to admit that. There's lots of mutual pining and I loved it.
Henry is officially one of my favorite Kate Canterbary men. He's a gold retriever who is all about taking care of Whitney even when it means he can only do it with little gestures like leaving her favorite pens or intentional accidental touches. But don't be mistaken, this golden retriever can turn feral when it comes to Whitney.
Whitney is such a great character. She's at the top of her field as a transplant surgeon and makes everyone around her better. Being the black cat that she is, Whitney is incredibly loyal to her friends and chosen family. I could appreciate how important her integrity is to her. I loved how good Henry is to her, and Whitney more than deserves someone who loves her like that.
I loved all of the side characters in this book. Most are new like Henry's cohort and transplant surgeon attending Dr. Copeland, but there are appearances by characters from other Vital Signs series books like my favorite now Chief Cal Hartshorn. The one that stands out the most is Meri, Whitney's ride or die bestie and sister of the heart. I can't wait to read Meri's book!
Change of Heart has already claimed a spot in my top 3 romances for 2024. This incredible book is a must read. I'm looking forward to a re-read by listening to the audiobook.
I received a gifted copy of this book.
