American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy's Forgotten Crisis by Adam Hochschild
4.0
Excellent (4.5 stars) and imperative reading, especially now as we face down a repressive and authoritarian presidential candidate and weak willed political lackeys who live to do his bidding. I'm only taking off a half star for narrative structure, which at times undercuts the powerful parallels to today and dangers ahead of us, and the narrator whose voice I didn't connect with. Still highly recommended - it will alarm and depress you!
