Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge

dark mysterious reflective tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

3.5

Sorrowful, Impasse, and Flourishing Beasts were my favorite chapters. Story kind of started losing me toward the end: got tired of each story basically having the same format
there are strange beasts, they're just like us! Until something monstrous about them is revealed and someone close to us will likely die (or maybe an entire species)
I didn't care much for how the professor and Zhong Liang talked to the Main Character but I think I'll chock some of it up to being lost in translation/culture. And the way the overarching storyline wrapped up between the three of them was kind of lost on me, but I'll admit I started zoning out during the later chapters.
