The Aeneid by Virgil
3.0
Wellll I enjoyed The Aeneid up to a point. That point being the end of book 6. The first six books were excellent, very much like Homers Odyssey… jolly japes at sea, adventures, losses, loves, a daring trip to the underworld. Included within: lessons in how to hug a ghost .. tame a guard dog .. leave a lover while feigning an honourable retreat and how souls are reborn. Great stuff.
Then I think Virgil wanted to create a Roman Iliad.. Books 7 to 12, with battles galore, were his flimsy attempt at copying that. I love the Iliad but Virgil’s version left me totally cold. So I would say books 1-6 are all you need to get utmost enjoyment and it seems a good place to stop..
