I could not stop thinking about this book. Annie Bot is created to be a "cuddle bot," designed to be a perfect girlfriend for her owner, Doug. But Annie Bot is different. She's been programmed to be more sentient, and it's changing her.
This was an incredible story that really touched on all kinds of themes of womanhood, intimacy, and emotional abuse in relationships. Doug's relationship with Annie is not outright abusive (although you can definitely argue that it is!), but it's subtle in the ways he wants a subservient, physically perfect partner. His selfishness creates this environment ripe for abuse, and it's heartbreaking, especially as Annie becomes attuned to her own wants and needs. It's this fascinating allegory of a woman in an emotionally manipulative and abusive relationship slowly coming to the realization of her situation.
If you are a fan of Black Mirror, you will dig this. As a school librarian, I should state this is NOT a book for teens. Please be aware, there are many sexually explicit scenes (she is a "cuddle bot" after all!), but the message it gives on intimacy is powerful.
