Lanny by Max Porter
5.0
4.5/5
“I’m a million cameras, even when I’m sleeping, clicking, every second something is growing and changing. We are little arrogant flashes in a grand magnificent scheme” is an example of the curiously intelligent things that Lanny, a young boy from a small village, says making him something of a mystery to the people around him.
The voices in this book come from those people as well as Dead Papa Toothwort - an otherworldly being who, too, gets infatuated by the peculiar boy while listening alertly to the villagers. But the center is always Lanny, even though we never hear his perspective
Everything about Porter’s novel urges you to keep reading: the pacing (especially the feverish middle section), the structure, the lyrical prose and need to know the reality in the uncertain atmosphere. So I did, finishing Lanny in a couple of hours. And I think that worked in its favor.
The story has you spellbound and even though there are uncertainties left in the story that dissatisfy me lightly and it might not stay with me for a very long time, I can’t help but join the masses and praise Lanny. While I was reading it, I was completely transported. I really recommend choosing your reading environment so that you can read pieces out loud to yourself!
