Oxygen Mask: A Graphic Novel by Jason Reynolds

challenging emotional inspiring reflective sad slow-paced

5.0

‘Oxygen Mask’ is a graphic novel that blends different modes of art that creates a beautiful piece discussing global warming, protests, the pandemic, media and gaming addictions.

What initially attracted me to pick this up was the gorgeous blend of art and poetry. I loved that layout and design of this graphic novel. It’s an exquisite blend of two people’s experiences of the world during 2020. The book is set in a family home with each character having different focal points of the happenings of that year.

2020 and onwards has been such a heavy time for everyone in the world and i’m sure many people will see themselves reflected in this book. It beautifully describes the suffocation of world issues during that time and that are still affecting us now. This book is so powerful.

I really enjoyed the author/artist dialogue at the end of the book as i felt i was looking at art rather than reading a story and that the artists were explaining their work as if i’d been at an exhibition. This was great and i’d love to check out more work by both artists.
