Confessions of a High School Guidance Counselor by Kelsie Hoss

4.0

Such a sweet story and a PS heroine who loves herself I love it!

This story is adorable. I haven’t read any of the authors YA stuff - I’m a spice girl - but I really love her voice. Her characters are amazing!

I loved that Birdie was a plus sized girl who didn’t hate it about herself. She grew her confidence in the course of the book, but even in the beginning, she never hated herself for being fat. She never questioned if she was good enough for the world because she was fat. She just stated it for what it was and how it might be affecting things for her. Even when she pointed out that the woman her fiancé was leaving her for was thin she didn’t give herself hate for not being thin too. She just accepted it as her reality. She became Miss I’m Confident And I Wear Sequins after going through a lot, but I never got the impression that she felt that being fat was making her miserable. And I love that! We got a size 16 heroine who accepted herself from the get go. Score!

I have to admit something. I didn’t really love the way the spice was written. I understood what the author was going for and outside of the spicy bits, I love her voice. But something about the spice felt a bit off for me. Maybe it’s because she’s used to YA. Spice may be a muscle she needs to flex a bit. It didn’t turn me off to the book or make me want to DNF, but it’s something I hope she’ll get more confident with.

I’m so glad I read this book. It made me smile so big. 4 stars. I think it has 4 chili peppers based on my usual scale, but see the paragraph above this. For me, it didn’t feel like 4. That said -

Highly recommend!
