Silver-Tongued Devil by Jaye Wells
1.0
I enjoyed the general plot line, the writing and the characters, but the author proves herself to be a gender essentialist/TERF. I had challenges with the way she has the characters refer to one another as “the female” or “the male” from the first book, but I was able to write that off as a quirk of the supernatural subculture she developed and set the story in. However, when one character is trans and other characters call her a “lady-man” or “she-male” I am no longer able to look past it. And then when the conversation continues to the point where one character tells the trans character that she needs to stop hiding behind her female persona and makes a case that her being trans was just a way of hiding from her problems, I determined I could not read any further books from this author. I would like to know what happens in the fifth book, but I’ll just have to go read spoilers because subjecting myself to the author’s opinions about gender just aren’t worth it to find out by reading. There are too many good books out there that embrace diversity to waste time living in her small minded world.
