Circe by Madeline Miller

5.0

Perfect read! One of the best of 2018 if you are looking to pre order a good book. The storytelling is effortless. We follow Circe from birth. She does not seem to be a promising goddess nor is she a favourite of her parents. She isn't as talented as her siblings but soon she discovers magic. She is exiled (for reasons that make up the story) to an island and becomes a revered witch who brews magic from herbs. There is love, betrayal, tension between siblings and the determination of a shunned woman to make a mark in the world. The scenes blend into one another making the book as easy read with lots of light moments that make you chuckle. I had difficulty remembering the names of all the minor characters (so many) but that doesn't really matter; I still loved the book. And there are so many mythical characters and stories that make an appearance that make this book a pure delight to read.

Edit : You don't need to know a lot about Greek mythology to read this book. Also you don't need to read Song of Achilles before Circe. I don't know much about the Greek myths nor have I read SoA; but I thoroughly enjoyed Circe.

Disclaimer : Much thanks to Bloomsbury for a copy of the novel. All opinions are my own.
