The Maid by Nita Prose

3.0

I feel conflicted about this book. I enjoyed reading it and was very much pulled into the world created by the author. Her writing is so polished and easy to read. The story hooked me enough to finish the book in two days.

However...As charming and enjoyable as Molly is, the way she was written sometimes felt patronizing. I imagine it's really difficult to write a neurodivergent character that doesn't end up coming off as a caricature. But still, Molly's social ineptitude sometimes felt like it was there purely for comedic effect, like the reader is supposed to laugh at her expense (I'm especially thinking about the "date" with her sleazy coworker and her police interrogation). Sometimes Molly's misunderstandings reminded me of Amelia Bedelia, a children's book character who takes everything very literally, leading to comical misunderstandings.

All of that being said, I consider myself to be neurotypical so my reading could be off. I'm curious to hear what neurodivergent readers make of Molly.
