Through My Window by Ariana Godoy
2.0
I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
From the synopsis, it seemed like this book was definitely NA rather than YA, so I was excited to snag this one. In actuality, these characters are in high school although they are 18. I just…didn’t want to read about horny teenagers still attending high school.
Moving on, the author is Latina and given the Spanish names of the two main characters it was clear to me that this was some much needed Latinx rep—or so I thought. Outside of the names of the mc’s and the fact that Raquel states exactly once that she is a Latina, there’s no other context/information given. There’s no Spanish or Spanglish in the dialogue, no discussion of ethnicity or culture. If it weren’t for the Spanish names you’d NEVER know any of the characters were Latinx. I also found out that the author posted this story in Spanish on Wattpad and translated it into English herself—so what happened?
As for the plot itself—there wasn’t much of one. One could argue that Godoy was focusing more on internal conflict for most of the characters, but I just didn’t see much development with any of them, especially the main characters. I honestly didn’t care about any of them which is why it took me nearly 2 weeks to struggle through this book.
