If You Want Me Close by Skye Kilaen

Did not finish book. Stopped at 85%.
Up until like 60-65% I would've said 3.5 stars, and then it fell off a narrative cliff for me.

i am very sorry
but these two should not be in a relationship

I wanted to like this book and persevered beyond the point that I should have DNF'ed (around 70%) because I had hopes that it could be redeemed. Simon's portrayal of depression in particular was well drawn, but I had other issues before this last straw (where the mother of Ziah's secret child is basically fridged so that the two of them could parent her without having to deal with her getting back into the Mormon church). It felt like a deus ex machina that then derailed everything and I couldn't get back on board bc it didn't seem like there was a way for them to repair things.

Simon advising Ziah not to tell Carolyn's parents their daughter was dead until he calls his lawyer seemed . . . off to me. I think it was supposed to be a reaction based in Simon's sibling's experiences with custody issues, but . . . no. From that point on, Simon tries to manage the whole situation and Ziah understandably gets upset and pulls away. But that isn't very far, bc he never managed to tell Simon he had a two year old child.

I just didn't think there was any way for them to get to a point in the last 10-15% of the book where I would believe that they were ready to embark on a deeper relationship.
