The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Minds and Our World by Max Fisher

4.0

A hair-pulling and incredible read on the apathy of social media companies and the harms they’ve helped cause. I appreciate the extensive lengths the author went to cover multiple countries who’ve struggled in part by social media’s lack of moderation and safe guarding.

I do have to point out something that bothered me- throughout the book the author mentions that ‘both far-left and far-right groups’ cause mayhem and misinformation.
However, the author gives extensive and negatively impactful events caused by far-right groups thanks to social media, but doesn’t really give examples of ‘far-left’ groups going ‘too far’.

One can argue the example of people reacting negatively to what they believe is a hate crime towards a black man was a ‘far-left’ thing, but I’d argue backlash to perceived racism isn’t exclusively a left thing. One example among dozens and dozens of far-right groups causing vaccine declines, hate crimes, and even genocide…I don’t believe that saying it’s a ‘both sides’ thing is correct here. Disclaimer- I’m not encouraging or endorsing the negative behaviors any group of people exhibit online in reaction to what they see online.

Also, Brianna Wu makes an appearance as a ‘left’ figure but given her extensive history of just saying whatever gets her attention (even if it’s notably not PC), I’m not sure if she classifies as a reliable source. I understand that she was harassed during the Gamergate thing but…she’s not the best person to be used as an example here.
