Fairy Tail, Volume 1 by Hiro Mashima

5.0

Okay this was a fun read.

I got into Fairy Tail a few years ago through the anime. There was something quite entertaining about a group of miscreant wizards questing throughout an area. I sadly never read the manga due to getting distracted with other series. Now that the final season is airing I have decided to read the manga from the beginning and then the sequel manga. This omnibus was my starting point.

The story follows a guild of mages which the main cast is part of Fairy Tail. The story is full of magic, adventure, cool villains, plot twists and fights. The omnibus contains the first five volumes which go from some of the main characters meeting to an arc which delves into a main characters past.

Mini review of the five volumes:

Volume 2: Primarily set characters up and location. In it we were introduced to a large portion of the protagonists as well as their particular magic. The arcs in this one were fairly short and it ended with the set up for the next one. I also enjoyed the little side story with Happy at the end since it was light hearted fun and fairly amusing.

Volume 2: This picked up where the other volume left off with Lucy, Natsu and Happy’s first proper quest as a group. It also ends with the set up for the next arc which brings together the eventual main character group with the addition of Grey and Erza to the initial group. We also found out more about the nature of Lucy's magic and how she is able to use it. The first part of the volume was slightly dull but the next arc set up is promising.

Volume 3: okay this is where the storyline really picks up and starts to get interesting. Even though the plot line is fairly episodic This volume is the start of the more interesting long arcs. The fights were cool to read, the magic rocked and the art style made things interesting. The volume also ended on a cliffhanger to keep readers wanting to see what happens next.

Volume 4: This resolved the cliffhanger from the previous volume and set up for the first multiple volume arc. In the past they only were really one volume arcs but the arc started in this volume spans a few volumes. We also get in this volume a better idea of power levels with the characters and met some of the more powerful members of the guild. We also got hints as to greys backstory and what happened to him in the past.

Volume 5: Okay this was the last volume of the omnibus but sadly it did not wrap up the arc. We got the rest of greys backstory and his link to this arcs villain. We also got some fairly interesting fights between main characters and the villain group which helped show what Grey and Natsu are capable of better.

My only real complaint was the art style. It was a bit strange and definitely took a little getting used to. Also some of the character designs were slightly strange and different from what I remember seeing in images. This was a minor issue though since the art style was not the worst I’ve seen and at times worked with what was going on to make the scenes more interesting. On a related side note, there is far less fan service in the manga then there was in the anime.

Really enjoyed this and will definitely read more in a bit. Will be interested to see how series plays out and if there are too many differences between this and the adaption.
