Easy and Fun Hiragana: First Steps to Basic Japanese Writing by Kiyomi Ogawa

challenging informative lighthearted fast-paced

2.0

I turned to this book, expecting to practice Hiragana.  The first part met my needs exactly.  I used the workbook pages to practice writing hiragana.

The workbook section includes words and their English meanings. However, I barely paid attention, as it seems impossible to learn random words with neither context nor repetition.

The second part through me in the deep end with various grammar explanations. There are no exercises or writing in this part.  If you don’t already have a basic knowledge of Japanese, it likely won’t make sense.

The third part had reading comprehension exercises. This part is neither fun nor easy, unless in the context of a class that is teaching more than this book.

The final section on manga was cute, but would have been better if used throughout.
