City of Ghosts by V.E. Schwab

5.0

SpoilerI loved this! Edinburgh is one of the top places I want to go mostly because if the history and the ghosts, so this was such a perfect book for me. I'm really hoping to go for my 30th in a couple of years so I will use this book to make our itinerary!!

I loved the lore that was explored in this book. The Raven in Red was a creepy ghost story to scare children come to life and she was so menacing but with a backstory that made you feel some sympathy for her. She wasn't always evil, at some point she was a loving mother and it demonstrates what grief can do to a person.

I adored Cass. She was such a brave and interesting kid. I loved her ability and how it was described. Her seeing the veil between our world and the afterlife was just such a great visual. I also loved the relationship between her and Jacob. The way they were intertwined, linked together by what happened was awesome. I loved the way that in our world, they couldn't touch but in the veil he was often stronger than her. It gave us an idea of how difficult it is for spirits to have any kind of corporal form or interact with anything in our world. I am worried about what Lara said at the end though. I'm so glad there is going to be a sequel because I need to know what happens next.

I also loved Cass' parents. They were such a perfect match for each other and complimented each other perfectly. I loved her mum best of all because she's exactly how I want to be all the time. I believe in ghosts and all that stuff, she embraces her believe in a way I have always tried to but she's so much more magical with it! And her dad is how I want all non-belivers to be. Just repectful and accepting that people are different. It's like with any belief really. How many times have I been mocked for believing in ghosts? More times than I can count. It's weird. Just let me believe. I'm not asking you to believe but I want to. So I really loved their relationship and how even though they were so different they found a way to connect over something and both find a passion in it. Perfect.

I love the plot and characters, I of course adored the writing and I am very, very intrigued as to what will happen next!
