Shubeik Lubeik by Deena Mohamed

This was a really fun graphic novel. The world building was incredibly well done. The idea of wishes existing in this world raised a LOT of questions, but Deena Mohamed did an excellent job answering them. There are still a couple aspects of the magic system that I question and I do wish that the system was explained at the beginning rather than after the first chapter, but overall it was great.

Nour’s chapter was by far my favorite. If that was the only chapter this would be an easy five stars. It was such an accurate yet rather lighthearted portrayal of depression and Nour was just such a likable character to follow. They also had my favorite character design in the book, which leads me to the art. The art wasn’t my favorite, and I don’t quite understand why it goes back and forth between black and white and color, but it wasn’t bad. Some pages were better than others.

The other chapters were enjoyable. I guess I just personally wasn’t as interested in those stories, and they lagged a bit for me, but I really appreciated the discussions of colonialism within the story and the humor the whole way through.
