Beach Read by Emily Henry

5.0

I really, really loved this book. I've been trying to alternate between heavy, thought-provoking books/podcasts/TV shows and media that is more escapist than lighthearted to give myself a reprieve in the world, and this was my lighthearted media. But it was far more thought-provoking and profound than I expected. The plot may seem a little silly and contrived on the face of it, but the way it unfolds within the novel makes complete sense for the characters and feels really natural. The novel delves into what it means to be broken, how we handle the inevitable challenges life throws us, and what we do when everything we thought we knew turns out to be a lie. I really loved the main characters, and their love story felt real and nuanced. I was rooting for them the whole time, and not just rooting for them to be in love and have their happily ever after, but for them to know each other, for them to find a way to keep on and reform their narratives about themselves and each other. It also had a side narrative about why people stay in seemingly impossible circumstances - I don't want to give away too much, but their research of the New Eden complex was fascinating, heartbreaking, and illuminating. The ending was incredibly satisfying and felt earned. The whole book was also super sexy and fun. This is overall a great "beach read," but much more than that.
