The Only Child by Guojing
5.0
Very much like David Wiesner's works Flotsam and Tuesday, Guojing's The Only Child has no words to tell the story. You only have the sequence of images that show the story about a little girl who gets lost on her way to visit her grandmother. This is one of those stories that will bring tears to your eyes due to the warming of your heart. Guojing's art is lovely and pristine.
While I cannot relate to being left home alone at such a young age, I grew up an only child who often had to find ways to entertain myself. Most often I found my entertainment in books, so this story rings with me in a special way.
I recommend this book and Wiesner's books as learning tools for children to help them see how the story plays out and then allow them to write a story based on what the book has shown them.
