5 stars for this amazing book.
Where do I even begin? This book touched my heart. It literally made my heart hurt at some points for Paul and Olivia. I loved learning about the damage that war does to veterans, because a lot of times it is overlooked and disregarded. This book goes into depth about the damage war really does to a person. So here's Paul's story..
Paul has been home for 2 years since he was ambushed in Afghanistan during the war. Paul has some nasty scars on his face, and a bad leg. Paul has a hard time deal with this since he was so gorgeous and perfect before. He was the star quarterback in high school, and had no trouble with girls, and was happy when he went off to serve his country. Now he is down right miserable. His father has "caregivers" come and live with him to hopefully get Paul out of this rut he is in. Paul scares every single one of them off because that's what Paul does; he pushes people away. But Paul's dad warns him that if he runs this one off, he doesn't get his checks from his dad to support him financially. This is a big deal for Paul, and not for a shallow reason, he needs these checks for a purpose. Not gonna spoil why, you will have to read the book. Anyway, Daddy is smart. So incomes Paul's new caregiver... Olivia Middleton.
So Olivia's story..
Hot 22 year old blonde Rich kid from New York, has a New York life.. but it's not a simple, fun life for Olivia. Being an only child in a family that runs a business is a lot of pressure. She was attending NYU for business, but just couldn't finish it. She felt like she was doing what her parents wanted, not what she wanted. She needed a break, and mostly needed to get away from New York, and the people in it. After a devastating breakup with her longtime ex Ethan, and the strange friendship her and Michael had/lost, New York is not where she wants or needs to be right now. So she gets offered to be a caregiver in Maine to what she presumes is an old wrinkly war vet that needs help and company.. Oh was she so wrong.
Paul and Liv's attraction is instant. I love instant attraction in books. The minute they met I knew I was in for a good ride. The best part of this book is they make each other better people. I like how they don't jump right into things, and that there is a lot of arguing going on. And while some people may say Paul was a total ass (which he was), please keep in mind he is a veteran who obviously has a severe case of PTSD, and is still hurting inside. Olivia makes Paul feel things he hasn't felt in a long time. Paul makes Olivia feel a way she never has before... not with Ethan, Michael, anyone.
I loved the writing style of this book. Everything was smooth and easy to understand but it also kept you on your toes. I loved how the author threw some things in the novel that made you go "WTF I can NOT believe he/she just did that". The dual point of views really benefited this book well. I know if we hadn't got the chance to see into Paul's head, we would have never truly understood him or liked him. Props to Lauren Layne for doing he research on the scary facts of war and what it does to people. Makes me wonder if she had someone close to her go through what Paul did because she described everything so well and in depth. I highly recommend this book. I read it in less than 24 hours it was so amazing.
