The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim

3.0

“There are some things that you can never truly escape. Not really.”

Alright despite anything to do with eyes giving me the absolute ick I was really excited to read this one. I love when we get books with female rage coming out in such a dramatic way. However, this book was not at all what I expected. I honestly was a little disappointed. I think if it had been advertised as something else I could have enjoyed it way more. The book really did not feel like a horror at all. It took a long time to even get to the point honestly that anything actually seemed to happen. I really wanted to like it and was willing to set aside the number of times I had to read the word "eyes" because I was prepared for the horror or psychological horror elements.
I will admit that we see Ji-won spiral through some serious psychological issues throughout the book... we don't really get horror. The book is more this interesting look at race and gender through the eyes of a college age Korean-American girl. I think the cultural dynamics of this story were fascinating on a variety of levels and the whole adjustment to mom's new boyfriend which ultimately was the premise of the story... made it less horror... it's one of those books that you don't dislike and can read and get into, once you set aside the fact that it's supposed to be a horror novel. I would be interested to read more by this author in the future though. But also eyes are still gross.
