Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano
5.0
First Read: Summer 2012
Re-read: Spring 2014
Serano tore our society a new one. I can see why some people might find it upsetting since she just doesn't let up the whole book, she is relentless. But it just makes so much sense, and is so logically argued, that you find yourself with little choice but to accept what she says as true. I really found myself desperately grasping for an argument to dismiss her claims, but I couldn't. I didn't realize how bad things were for trans women! Their struggles also are reflective of the larger issue between cissexual men and women.
Based on the title, I imagine only a small portion of the general population would pick this book up, but I think everyone should read this. Even if you're not trans, and don't care about trans issues, this book applies to everyone. But if you ARE trans, this is a big one!
