My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

4.0

Suburban fantasy come to fruition. A perfect marriage. Two children. Three bodies. And counting.

I am relatively new to the thriller/crime fiction genre, and domestic thrillers are typically at the bottom of my list. But there was something compelling about this one's cover and description that made me pick it up (and also for David Pittu's impeccable narration skills). Our nameless narrator and his lovely wife, Millicent, live a seemingly perfect life in a wealthy, insular community. He is a tennis coach; she is a successful real estate agent. They eat dinner at 6, have weekly movie nights, go to their daughter's soccer games, and kill for sport - and aphrodisiac.

While many of this book's twists were predictable, I still enjoyed them immensely when they came. The writing itself is nothing to write home about, but Pittu's skillful characterization made it come to life (I recommend the audiobook before the print). What I enjoyed most about this book is Downing's sense of humor. Millicent and our narrator are evil, ridiculous hypocrites, and the stupidity with which they operate is always treated seriously, and therefore is always funny. All in all, this book is nothing revelatory, but it is incredible amounts of fun. And that ending.
