An American Beauty by Shana Abé
4.0
I feel like the tone (neither overtly romantic but also not drily pragmatic) and balance of description and dialogue struck perfectly rightly. There was a moment where I felt the pace sag a bit, but overall the story moves easily, time progresses naturally, and the various POVs are not at all jarring or unharmonious. It’s very, very much a fictionalized biopic of sorts, however the finesse at which the author weaves actual details and her own suppositions of Belle Hutchinson’s life are fluid and makes for a good story.
