The Solstice Pudding by Angel Martinez
5.0
The Solstice Pudding by Angel Martinez was everything I've come to expect from this fabulous author. Wacky, funny, and wholly original. It's a holiday-lite novella and perfect for any time of year, whether it's 'tis the season or you're simply looking for a shorter book to relax with after work. The space station location keeps this from being overly heavy on snow angels and eggnog, which makes it appealing to the sci-fi reader, but the heartfelt emotions of... er... attempting to deliver a solstice gift still has the holiday feelgood vibe along for the ride.
I should explain. Shandi, an adorable engineer, has been crushing hard on ex-Marine Tyra, who has recently taken a job on the same space station. Tyra keeps to herself, isn't much for conversation, and basically these two are Opposites Attract and The Grumpy One Loves the Sunshine One, and I am here for it! In an effort to woo Tyra, Shandi decides to get her a Solstice gift. Seems simple enough, right? Ah well, remember, this is an Angel Martinez book. Shandi, with the help of her engineering assistant, Miteg, purchases a cute and mysterious little animal supposedly called an ussi. It is of questionable origins, but heck, it eats kale chips. How dangerous could it be? Shandi is certain that Tyra would love it, so she goes through with the transaction and... well... all hell breaks loose.
Because when a cute little critter turns out to not be so cute or so little, and um, escapes, it'll take Shandi, Miteg, Tyra, and the soldier's whole Biological Customs crew to track the thing down before it evolves like a Pokemon Monster from Outer Space!
The cast of this book was extremely well developed, and the relationship that slowly grew between Shandi and Tyra was absolutely charming. Tyra in particular was such a well-rounded character, and has some difficult and heartbreaking baggage she's struggling to carry on her own when readers are first introduced to her. Martinez writes fantastic lesbian romances and I do hope she keeps up her holiday tradition of writing a new one every year. I highly recommend this bookâfor the humor, world-building, and tender romance.
