Heartstopper Volume 4 by Alice Oseman

5.0

NOTE: Please pay close attention to the trigger warnings below before reading, as this volume has a number of scenes that can be quite triggering if you have personal experience with any of the following: coming out, eating disorder (anorexia), OCD, self-harm, voluntary psychiatric hospitalization, bullying (mentioned), homomisia, bimisia.

I really loved and appreciate this volume. I was not expecting the focus on mental health, but it was really emotional to see the way Alice Oseman tackled portraying mental illness. I especially appreciated the emphasis on the importance of different kinds of love and relationships, of difficult conversations about mental health with family members, and how to be a supportive and loving friend when someone you care about is going through something so difficult. I wish there had been a bit more of the supporting characters in this volume, but I also understand how that was difficult to include while also giving the proper time and respect to the Charlie's journey (which I think Oseman did a better job at than any other author I've read).

This was my favorite section (spoilers, obviously): https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/heartstopper/5-20/viewer?title_no=329660&episode_no=134
