Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez

2.0

This starts off like a typical romance comedy, but with a dark edge, and I was enjoying that, but then we visit the department of expository backstory over and over and over again while nothing actually happens to the characters. The main theme turns out to be the main character's estrangement from her mother, which she overcomes, not through the support of her brother and other family, but by treating her "meet-cute" boyfriend like shit only for him to reveal that not only does he love her anyway, but he's filthy rich and it's okay if she never wants to work again. Oh, and we get a gratuitous rape scene for good measure.

This was received so well by critics, and it just didn't work for me at all.
