Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras

4.0

Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking, Ingrid Rojas Contreras’s debut deftly weaves between the perspectives of a young girl and her family’s live-in maid. The author integrates important historical context into the characters’ stories providing a lens into Colombia during the 90s. The story pacing may take some time to pull you in, but it is overall an incredibly critical perspective—shedding light on the politics and trials faced by Colombians, while also centering on the humanity and difficult decisions faced by those who life through the events.
