SPOILER HEAVY! (Marked but still)
So I really liked this book, it was very engaging and fast paced, but I have to agree with the people who said this book is more plot TWIST than it is plot. Many of said plots not having the foreshadowing necessary to make them feel natural, so they just felt slapped on. It had the same vibes as those old “spy vs spy” comics but Inez is just kinda… also there. Things happen around her but not as much to her. Like everyone else is playing chess and she is playing hopscotch. Thank goodness they never left this woman alone, she has the survival instincts of dodo bird.
I hate to say it… but I don’t like Wit. And she forgave him WAY too easily given that he NEVER ACTUALLY APOLOGIZED!!!The man married her knowing full well that he was going to rob her blind (casue again! No survival instincts!), oh but don’t you worry. He didn’t kick up much of a fuss consummating that marriage
Inez’s “fortune” doesn’t make an ounce of sense. Where did it come from? How do they have all of this money it’s implied they had this fortune LONG before either parent started selling artifacts so it can’t all be from that Is it “old money” and they are just living off the interest? Why was ALL of their money in a singular bank in Cairo when they are high society in Argentina?
On to Inez’s mother. Her timeline doesn’t make ANY SENSE!How did she spend half of the year in Egypt, half in Argentina, and ANOTHER half in England?!? That’s too many halves!! Also, explain to me how she has two daughters that are almost the exact same age, but her affair was only discovered LAST YEAR?!? How did she hide a whole ass pregnancy and double life?
However in her defense, the story spends a lot of time disparaging her as being this evil adulteress, and praising Inez’s father as this god among men, but to turn around and heavily imply she is a victim of marital rape and abuse. I genuinely think faking her death was the only way she could have gotten away from that man.and what the actual FUCK was that reveal that her dad was actually Sterling?!?!? What kind of absolute NONSENSE was that?!?!?
So many people died for this. I hate to say it but everyone who says that “none of this would have happened if [inez] had stayed in Argentina” is RIGHT! She accidentally causes problems and it gets people killed. “Oh , but if I hadn’t come I’d have never met Wit!” PEOPLE DIED INEZ! Namely your cousin who you bring up all the time but never seem to let her death actually sway you toward caution!!! also He literally sold you out at the FIRST opportunity to give every last penny you own to his gambling addicted, abusive father! He didn’t give them a stipend to help with expenses. Didn’t offer them a loan they that could pay back once debt were settled. Nope, just handed it RIGHT over!
I need to find someone irl to dissect this book with casue I have so many thought! This book sure invoked an emotion!
