A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

5.0

This story follows one dog’s quest to understand his mission in life when he finds himself reborn as a new puppy after living a short, previous existence. When he is introduced to his new owner, eight year old Ethan, the two are immediately inseparable and Bailey lives an adventurous, full life with his boy learning how to be a good dog. However, just when he thinks he has life figured out, he again finds himself reborn as another puppy. Bailey is very confused and wonders… what is his purpose?

The first of three books in a series plus also now a movie, this is such a heart-warming, tear-jerking story that just keeps you thinking long after finishing it!

Told from the perspective of the dog, the story follows the multiple reincarnations of one pup. In each iteration, Toby/Bailey/Ellie/Buddy is learning and understanding their purpose in life as each one builds and teaches them additional skills and concepts needed to eventually come to the realisation that they have been placed on Earth to help and save others, particularly Bailey’s ‘boy’.

The story focuses on themes of friendship, loyalty, and responsible pet ownership through the innocent and loving eyes of the dog(s). It conveys such a beautiful message of unconditional love and the positive or negative impact our actions can have on not just the lives of our pets, but our family and friends as well. It will no doubt make some readers think differently about how they treat their own furry companions as well as how they view their relationships with others. Telling the story from the perspective of the dog forces the reader to change their viewpoint to see how complicated and confusing our actions can be perceived by those who just don’t understand.

The length, complex wording and scene descriptions of this book make it much more suitable for readers 12 years +. However, the author has released a series of junior versions focusing on the different lives suitable for younger audiences.
