Good Bones and Simple Murders by Margaret Atwood

3.0

A mixed bag! To be honest, I was a little in a hurry to finish this for a book challenge, and I think it was the kind of book that would have benefitted from being consumed in bite size over a longer period of time, but for me it kind of got old halfway through. I loved that these were really short stories—closer to flash fiction for some. And it really showed how Atwood could pack a punch or at least an interesting idea in a very short amount of words. I enjoyed the myth and fairytale focused stories the most. I used to read a lot of fairytale and fairytale retellings and it really kind of brought me back to that time and reminded me how much I miss it. It was an almost nostalgic feeling. The more feminist-oriented tales got too samey after a while, just melding into each other to the point that I started skimming or outright skipping (like I said—this probably wouldn’t have been an issue if I had read the book over a longer period of time, so that’s my main recommendation).
