Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas
5.0
"Eventually we all have to weigh what we want more: wanting back what we had or wanting what could be. To stay or to risk everything to move forward"
This was a book that captured my attention from the first pages.
Not only this is a steamy romance book, but it also had great plot twists and storylines that intertwine. The main characters are mature-ish for their age (17-18) and the school aspect didn't overthrow the story, it was a nice background for the events to happen.
Ryen and Misha are the main characters who are childhood pen pals and have never seen each other. They promised to keep it that way to preserve what they have. They were perfect for each other until they met.
SPOILERS
I loved the dynamic of Ryen and Mason (when she didn't know he was Misha) and I love that he struggled with her not knowing the truth. Reding both POVs was beneficial to understand both characters better.
I do wish Ryen knew about Misha a bit earlier or directly from him but I still enjoyed her reaction. In my opinion, she was too quick to forgive him but then again - they have known each other for 7 years and truly loved each other, so it didn't really bother me.
Misha's storyline was quite interesting, especially with the plot twist that the principal was his mother - I did NOT see that one coming, and it threw me off.
I loved that Ryen was Punk, that it was a nod to Misha. I loved Misha's song, mentioning the number 57 and how it was a nod to Ryen. That was beautiful and tied the story really well.
I felt really bad for Annie, we saw her for 2 pages but I felt on the story, in the explanation - how actually sad she was. She just wanted her mom back. And that's what killed her.
As someone who doesn't enjoy when babies or pregnancies are written in the storylines, I'm very grateful it only happened in the epilogue and didn't impact the main story.
Another thing I enjoyed - both Ryen and Misha struggling in school, struggling to find their place. For most people, I think, high school is hell on earth, and seeing that behind Ryen's facade was a broken, lonely girl who just wanted to fit in was refreshing. Her meanness is not excused by her fears but it was nice to see her break away and stand up for herself and others.
4.7/5 from me, cannot wait to read more Penelope Douglas works!
