The Secret History by Donna Tartt
5.0
WOW. This book is easily my favorite book I've read so far this year, maybe even of all time. It used so many elements that I generally love in books and used those aspects perfectly. It was unpredictable and kept me so intrigued! At first I wasn't keen on the ending but after rereading it and having some time to think about it I like it a lot more. It tied up a consistent theme throughout the book so nicely.
I was nervous to read this book for several reasons:
- Long chapters, which I normally despise, but the author kept my interest and included several breaks that made it easy to stop and then pick it up again.
- General popularity. Usually when I hear people rave about books I always get disappointed due to reviewers getting my expectations too high. I went into this book with a grain of salt for that reason and it impressed me as soon as I finished the first chapter.
- The fact that phrases in other languages were used. There weren't too many but I regret not looking up a masterlist of translations sooner because it took up a lot of time while reading.
- I was really worried that this book would be more disturbing than it was, it was definitely disturbing at times, more so towards the end, but not quite in the way I thought it would be.
- Lack of Greek knowledge. I was scared I didn't know enough about Greek history or philosophy but the book explained everything very well and there were only a couple of times where I felt confused by a subject (but those subjects weren't that important to the story so my lack of understanding didn't effect my enjoyment of the book).
So if you are someone who is scared of this book for any of the reasons above please don't let that stop you. This book made me think and changed my perspective and made me question my OWN morals. It was such a wild ride and I'm excited to reread. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys this genre, although if this isn't what you usually go for I wouldn't recommend this as a first dive into the murder mystery section.
