Love in Color: Mythical Tales from Around the World, Retold by Bolu Babalola

4.0

Love in Color is a collection of thirteen tales steeped in love, ten of which are woven anew from ancient tales and three are the author's own creation. The short stories draw inspiration from the ancient tales but instead center the women and more specifically, women of color, of the tale. Growing up and living in a Western world experience, I was not familiar with most of these tales. I connected with Scheherazade's sweet sorrow, Yaa's battle between duty and her heart, Naleli's hesitancy to be confident in her own beauty, and Orin's roll with the punches happy go lucky aura.

I do appreciate that Babalola included the sources of inspiration, some of which my curiosity will end with me finding the original tales. This is an anthology of reimagined tales but in some instances, the tales felt almost too similar. I would have loved more. All in all, this is a faster read but I found myself reading one story at a time as I couldn't just stop mid-scene. If you're looking for love stories that center women of color written by a woman of color, then this is your book.
