The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

5.0

I feel extremely small to even start reviewing this beautiful piece of art. So this isn't a review. This is just a write-up about an endearing story that teaches us how to hold on even in the most terrible of situations.

Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman, thriving and successful in his catches all his youth and middle age, has been without a catch for 84 days now as his old age is catching up with him and the fishermen around have started referring to him as "bad" luck. He doesn't mind it though. He doesn't have anyone to feed, is up to himself and no one worries about him apart from the boy, Manolin, who comes to his shack every night, feeds him and takes as much care of the old man as possible. Santiago, however, is never one to give up even after 84 days of failure. He sets off for the far out Gulf Stream in the hope of an epic catch on the 85th day, hoping to break the jinx.

"The Old Man and the Sea" is a remarkable tale of Santiago's struggle against the odds that are put up against him in the form of a giant catch, about how deterioration of physical strength did not hinder his spirit, about how during the toughest of times he did not fail to admire the dignity of his adversary and finally how his dreams stayed on even in times of mammoth failures.
