In Devil’s Pawn Jericho has finally returned home with his young daughter. The mother of his daughter was killed and Jericho is convinced that the Bishop’s had something to do with her death and his father’s death. So coming home he has decided he will have his revenge. He initiates the rites which give him control of Isabelle the half sister of Carlton the last Bishop. Isabelle is truly naive about the council, the group and all of its rules and rituals of which some are downright degrading. However, she stuck with no where to go, since she has no family and Carlton has no choice but to approve of the marriage between Jericho and Isabelle because he is being bribed.
Jericho is truly stuck in one mode, he must enact revenge for his family even when given proof that Isabelle is oblivious about previous actions. He loves his daughter but, his anger prevents him from truly being a good father. He is brutal, cruel and very harsh with Isabelle. Isabelle is a naive 19 year old girl. She stuck in a system where she can’t make her own decisions or do what she wants. She is so good with Jericho’s daughter even though he tries to keep them apart. Isabelle tries to stand up for herself but she is usually browbeaten by Jericho. I enjoyed this dark, intense story of this group of people who have their own laws and rules. I cannot wait to read the next book in this duet since this book ended on a cliffhanger.
