Johns is a Nehiyaw aunty and member of Sucker Creek First Nation in Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta and wrote this book on the unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories, Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8. I read this book on the unceded lands of the Kaurna peoples.
Mackenzie has been having dreams of crows and home. Mackenzie wakes one morning with a crows head in her hand. This began after the death of her sister Sabrina a year ago. Crow murders have been following Mackenzie. Listening to the messages of her dreams, she returns home where she will have to go on to face the source of this all.
This book moves slowly and builds quiet suspense. My first delving into a horror book and it felt like a safe one for me to start with as I could understand the story purposes. I can’t say I’ll be delving further into horror however. 🙊 I adored once again the community and family connections in the story and the power of these connections for protection. If you’re wanting to explore horror for the first time - I couldn’t recommend this book more!
