Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda

3.0

Summary: Paul and Mia Strom are married with a wealthy lifestyle and two young sons. Paul is a high-level marketing executive and Mia used to work in marketing as well until they married and had children. Now they are driving out to their summer home for a child-free weekend and Paul has the “best day ever” planned. Mia has been feeling very unwell for a while with fatigue and stomach troubles. On the drive, the atmosphere is charged with tension and words unspoken. Through the strained conversation, we learn that all is not well in the Strom marriage and this weekend may bring more than either Paul or Mia planned.

Thoughts: I listened to this novel on audiobook, which I find really adds to the experience of a Kaira Rouda novel. This was no exception, as the narrator really brought the charismatic manipulator that is Paul Strom vividly to life. Most of the novel is told through his POV, with a conclusion from Mia. It is impossible to say much without spoilers, but as with most Rouda novels, there are unlikeable characters, bad behaviour and some twists. I can’t say that there were any huge surprises in the storyline, but I did enjoy myself all the same. Looking forward to the second in the series, The Second Mrs. Strom.
