Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

5.0

The writing in this book is so beautiful. It is written simply enough to be easily understood and followed, but the language used is just perfection. The story is lovely and the many lessons woven into the plot are delivered so incredibly well.

The inspiration from Chinese folklore is woven together with an original story in a way that brings forth a modern Aesop feel. The main tale is constructed with several off shoots to smaller stories, much like the construction of Nghi Vo's Singing Hills Cycle and the result is just magical and ethereal.

The characters are lovely and somewhat flawed, but all given the opportunity for a redemption arc. Without fail, each character is constructed in a way that makes them feel real, full of emotion and logical progression. They are believable and yet the overwhelming feeling of the story is something beyond this world.

I loved reading this book so much. It will definitely be one I will have on my own shelves and one that will go into my list of permanent recommendations.
